Host: Joni Kindwall-Moore
Guests: Royd Carlson of The Teff Company
Joni Kindwall-Moore sits with Royd Carlson from The Teff Company to talk about what it takes to grow a specialty crop like Teff.
What You'll Learn In This Episode:
The founding of The Teff Company is a story that bridges rural Idaho to the Horn of Africa. Teffco was started by an Idaho native, Wayne Carlson, after a trip to Ethiopia. Wayne's sons, Royd and Gareth, are now the operators of Teffco and are scaling the business to new levels. A staple grain in Ethiopia and Eritrea, Teff is naturally gluten-free and a hardy crop. Teffco sells both Ivory and Dark Teff.
Teff is a fine grain about the size of a poppy seed. It is much smaller than traditional crops and milling requires different techniques. Teff does well with dryer growing conditions than traditional US crops.
Royd discusses the journey his family has taken in growing their milling operation. He talked about smaller-scale milling market opportunities and the benefit of adding crop diversity — also the benefits of crop diversity with specialty crops that are also regenerative by nature. He also discussed adding specialty crops to a family farm using smaller mill options allows business growth.
