GF | V | 12 oz - If you have been looking for a delicious way to get more vegan protein in your diet, look no further. Our garbanzo bean falafel mix requires only hot water and cooking oil. You can cook it quickly on your waffle iron or you can make it into the traditional round patties that most of us are familiar with. Either way, you will love this deliciously savory and delightfully filling vegetarian food.
Falafel is a traditional staple throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean. It is served on a pita with fresh salad and vegetables or as part of a Mezze plate that usually includes many salads, dips, and proteins that are enjoyed with pita. The Mezze is usually enjoyed communally with friends and family.
At our house, we eat falafel on top of a large salad consisting of greens, cucumber, tomato, and onion. We will often grill eggplant and sweet peppers to go with it and garnish it all with tzatziki and fresh feta.
Tzaziki sauce and tahini sauce are our typical accompaniments, but there are many delicious toppings that will take your falafel into new realms of delicious! In some parts of the world, I have eaten falafel with a spicy harissa-like hot sauce and one of our retailers in Spokane, WA serves it with chipotle pepper jelly. So explore and get creative, mix it up a little and let us know what your favorite falafel dip is!
My favorite, easy Tzaziki:
1 cup yogurt (thick greek style works the best, can use non-dairy yogurt)
1 medium clove of garlic, finely minced
1/2 cup of finely chopped or shredded, peeled cucumber
1-3 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice (depends on your taste, start with 1 and add more to taste. We like it really lemony!)
1-2 Tablespoons of finely minced parsley, mint or cilantro (or all three!)
salt and pepper to taste
Mix well by hand and enjoy!
The bright, fresh flavor of this tzatziki against the salty, savory bean falafel is a flavor match and a combination of textures that is unforgettable!
Vegan Tahini sauce/dressing:
1/2 c tahini
1/3 c warm water
1-2 cloves of finely minced garlic
2 T fresh lemon juice
1-2 tsp minced, fresh parsley
pinch of salt
Blend well in blender or food processor, add more salt and lemon to taste
Drizzle the tahini sauce over the falafel and enjoy! It is great finished with Zatar seasoning or Sumac. I love this dressing on salads, fresh veggies or as a dip for my freshly made, Snacktivist Pitas (recipe coming soon!).
